I’ve been fortunate enough to have played on every surface of tennis court during my life, and I appreciate them all. Each of the types of courts has its differences, some of which are good and some of which may work against you as a player.
More tennis courts these days have a hard surface than any other kind. This wasn’t always the case, as the origins of the sport trace back to grass and clay courts. Still, there are many reasons that many choose to build hard courts, most notably the fact that they’re low maintenance.
What are some of the unique attributes of hard courts, and how should the game be played on them? Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.
This is a fast type of surface to play on, and this may work for or against you when it comes to playing a match. If you have a big serve, you’ll thrive here as your serve will skid once it bounces, making it fast and difficult for your opponent to return.
When it comes to ground strokes, you can do some damage here too by hitting the ball hard and with heavy spin. This will keep the pressure on your opponent, especially if the ball is kept deep. Beware though, your opponent could do the same to you, giving you a hard time in the process.
If you’re a fast runner, this never hurts in the sport of tennis, but it won’t be something you can exploit, so to speak. Your speed will be a bigger asset on hard courts than it is on grass, but it won’t let you get to as many balls as you can on clay courts.
A fast runner still has an advantage on hard courts, though, especially if he or she hits shots with a fair bit of power on them. The combination of these two assets will give your opponent a lot of difficulty against you in a match.
As far as net play goes, some of the best volleyers in the world have had great success on hard courts. This is because of the fact that a serve and volley strategy is a terrific way to take full advantage of this surface.
