This article is for new or intermediate Table Tennis players who are buying a new table tennis table or wish to upgrade, we will be talking about what you need to look for when buying a table tennis table.
Manufacturers want your money!
All manufacturers are trying to convince you that their product is the best for you! So you must get it clear in your mind what you need from a new table. You must focus on what is important to YOU before you buy a table. Are you playing with a few mates in the garage after school, or can you see yourself as the next Olympic Champion, because in this day and age not many people have got money to burn right!
Is this your Families First Table Tennis Table.
For your families first table tennis table I would recommend exploring the cheaper tables. If you want all members of the family to enjoy table tennis it might be a good idea to buy a cheaper table first. All young families will tend to give their first table tennis table a tough time, so if you buy a cheaper table to start off, then if you have a budding world champion in the family. You can upgrade to a more professional model later.
Fixed or Folding Table.
Few people have the room to leave a table tennis table set up permanently in the house so i would recommend a folding table as they are very easy to use, and make good starter tables. Ensure the table can be setup and closed by 1 person. Good tables have rollers so you can move it around. You don’t want your table to move during play, so ensure the brakes work well.
To be honest even if you decide that the table can be permanently set-up, a foldaway table is still a very good idea, as circumstances can change, maybe a new addition to the family needs the room or you want to move house and no longer have the space. This is obviously a high value item and you must consider all factors.
How thick is a good table?
Top flight tables are normally 25mm (1 inch) thick and without a doubt result in a great bounce, however these are the same tables used at top competitions and are expensive. I think most people will be utterly happy with a good quality 19mm table. Top players work their way up to full spec tables over time, so you can happily consider a 19mm table. I would suggest looking for a good 19mm thick folding table from a top manufacturer like Stiga, unless you can get a 25mm table at a bargain price.
If you play in competitions I’m sure you will want to practice on a equivalent table you you may feel now is the time to up grade to a 25mm table.
The Top is not the only thing to think about.
Make sure that the table you buy is of a good quality all round, paying particular attention to the support legs. A good feature built into a lot of tables is leg levellers. Outdoor Table Tennis is great fun so leg levellers are very useful here. Make sure your table top is precisely 76cm from the floor. Equally crucial to the overall quality are the small things like the net fittings etc.
All these small points add up and you deserve to get a good quality product for your money. Enjoy your Table Tennis Table.
