Former #1 tennis player Rafael Nadal will oppose Fernando Gonzalez during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open later today.
After a variety of concerns that he might not be physically healed from a knee wound that left him inactive for most of the summer months, the Spaniard has proven cynics wrong with some excellent play through his first 4 rounds of the tournament.
Nadal’s knee injury required him to miss Wimbledon in July, a grand slam that he won in ’08. Unable to defend his title and missing a small number of other tournaments, Nadal lost his top world position to Roger Federer, who exploited Nadal’s absence with a victory at Wimbledon.
Nadal additionally lost the world’s #2 ranking to Andy Murray, although he recaptured it with his fourth round victory at the US Open earlier this week.
Nadal has appeared to be performing at close to his top level in this tournament as he outdid Frenchman Gael Monflis in four |sets in the 4th round, seeming as quick as ever on the court.
Gonzalez on the other hand beat one more Frenchman, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the fourth round.
Gonzalez has beaten Nadal once before this, during the quarterfinals of the 2007 Aussie Open, but looking at the way Nadal has competed in the US Open, he must be very convinced about securing a spot in the semifinals.
Nadal took the tennis world by storm this past year when he emerged victorious at Wimbledon for the first time. Nadal backed up that performance by winning the gold medal at the Olympics for singles. He went on to finish the year as number one in the world for the first time in his lifetime.
The U.S. Open is the only critical slam absent from Nadal’s gleaming resume, and given his current form, it might take a brave person to bet vs Rafa winning in New York this weekend.
