Create good habits in your time on court. Practice creates permanent habits that are not always truly perfect. The drills suggested below are a guide for perfect practice of your ground strokes using a hitting partner or ball machine feed.
Practice a specific ground stroke following the four successive levels – consistency, control, spin and power/speed.
It is an unfortunate truth that Tennis is a game of managing your errors, generally, winners make fewer errors than losers. Following this practice regime will help reduce your errors as long as you treat errors as critical feedback and not useless annoyance.
Place your machine, or practice partner at a baseline corner of the court, have them initially feed as though a cross court rally is in progress. Keep the speed of the feeds consistent with what you normally use.
1.Consistency – Goal is a count of 20 consecutive stokes over the net in court.
2.Control – set a target with some type of marker deep in the opposite corner from your ball feeder, then attempt to hit the target with 20 successive shots.
3.Spin – Pick a particular stroke and hit it every ball as you count to 20 for both consistency and control by hitting to or near a target at the opposite corner to the feed.
4.Power – Support your racket and make an effort to send the ball to your target with a little extra oompf for a count of 20 consecutive.
Your strengths and weaknesses will be exposed by this method giving you the feed back you need to start working on perfecting your strokes. Monitor errors, initially with reference to consistency, then control, then spin and finally power.
I often see players attempt to practice these skills in reverse order, but spin, control and consistency are needed ahead of power. So temper your power until you have your strokes under control.
You can view the results of this kind of practice being showcased on tennis video’s of any top 10 ATP or WTA player.
