The US Open Tennis tournament, originally known as the US National Championship in 1881, is maintaining one of the oldest tennis traditions in the world. Normally, the tournament is held over a tour week period from the end of August into the first part of September, as is one of the four Grand Slam tennis titles and the last of the tennis season. The tournament has five event championships, including doubles, mixed doubles, singles and junior tournaments. The tournament will be held of the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, located in Queens, New York.

What sets the US Open apart from the other three Grand Slam tournaments is, instead of allowing the final sets to continue until someone wins by two games, there are final-set tie breakers. The grounds of the Billie Jean National Tennis Center are made of DecoTurf, which is a fast surface which produces less bounce and slightly less friction than other hard surfaces.

This year’s tournament will take place from August 31 through September 13. The opening night ceremonies will honor and pay tribute to athletes’ humanitarian contributions and endeavors. A special honor will be given to former Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi for his work with underserved youth with the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy. Agassi’s academy is located in Las Vegas, Nevada and works to provide opportunities to students and graduated its first senior class this year.

As is tradition August 29 will kick off the US Open with the annual Arthur Ashe Kids day, featuring an exciting lineup of music, attractions, and activities including actor and comedian Will Ferrell, platinum selling artist Jordan Sparks, and Andy Roddick, former US Open Champion. The day will be jam packed with interactive tennis activities, musical performances and celebrity appearances.

The 2009 U.S. Open will feature several highly anticipated matches and expectations. Recent Wimbledon winner Roger Federer won by besting Andy Roddick and fans are eager to see if Roddick will be able to rally and keep Federer from getting his sixteenth grand slam win. Serena Williams is the defending women’ champion and has been playing extremely well.

Tickets can be purchased in either ‘All Sessions’ blocks or by picking and choosing which sessions you might like to see. A ‘session’ means all of the matches for either the morning or evening, and tickets for the kid’s day are also sold by themselves. CBS will be covering the event along with ESPN.
